Translating international human rights commitments into national realities: The role of parliaments and their contribution to the Universal Periodic Review of the United Nations Human Rights Council

The Seminar is being jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the General Assembly (Legislative Power) of Uruguay in collaboration with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). It will be held in Montevideo on 15 and 16 July 2014. The Seminar is part of a series of regional events aimed at strengthening the contribution of parliaments to the work of the Human Rights Council.  The main purpose of this event is to inform participants of how the recently established Universal Periodic Review (UPR) works and to sensitize them to the importance of being involved in this mechanism. Another objective is to identify good parliamentary practice in collaborating with the Council and promoting human rights in general, notably though the effective participation of other stakeholders, such as national human rights organizations and various civil society actors.

The proceedings will take place exclusively in Spanish.
